pastor brian houston hillsong church

Brian Houston's 45-year reign as head of the huge Hillsong Church has come to a shocking end with the announcement that he has resigned.

Today at The Hillsong Church in Sydney's Waterloo, the barriers were up and the door was locked tight.

Although church staff and volunteers were no doubt rocked by the news that their long-time leader had left them, for critics of the church this moment has been a long time coming.

There have been a multitude of allegations spinning all the way back to the church's origins in the 1970s and to Brian Houston's less than holy father, Frank.

Frank was accused of historical child sex offences and Brian still faces the charge of concealing those crimes.

The accusations towards Frank forced Brian to step down as Hillsong's global figurehead last month.

"Hillsong's external legal counsel gave the board advice regarding the current charge I'm facing and that it would be best practice for me to step aside completely from church completely ...

In a statement to its 150,000 members worldwide it declared: "Dear Church, we would like to advise you that Pastor Brian Houston has resigned as Global Senior Pastor.....

"Irrespective of the circumstances around this, we can all agree that Brian and Bobbie have served God faithfully over many decades.

"We ask that you continue to pray for them, and the entire Houston family, during this challenging time."
