Why Are People Canceling Disney Plus?

In wake of Florida passing the “Parental Rights in Education” bill, more commonly known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, people all over the world seem prepared to cancel Disney+.

But why? Because Disney is now taking a public stance opposing the bill, leading to a feud between Disney and Florida, as well as many people on the right-leaning side of the political spectrum.

Those holding stocks in Disney are beginning to sweat, as people take to social media in order to spread largely hate-filled rhetoric about Disney.

When it comes to how many people have actually canceled their Disney+ subscriptions since #BoycottDisney erupted onto the scene, that’s where things become much less certain.

There have been claims over the past week that Disney+ has seen anywhere from 350,000 to half a million cancellations, but there is no proof nor any third-party metrics to back these numbers up.

Interestingly enough, while this effort to cancel Disney+ and Disney World seems to be a mostly GOP and Republican-led endeavor, people on the left are also expressing their own frustration with Disney.

It’s already pretty widely known that Disney creators have rarely been ones to rock the boat, meaning that they have often failed to adequately or openly include LGBTQ+ representation or the stories of other marginalized peoples.

On top of that, Disney seemed to struggle to take a stance on the “Don’t Say Gay Bill” bill when it was being deliberated, only speaking out against it once it was already passed into law, leaving many upset at the company for not doing more to prevent this outcome in the first place.

Regardless of which side you support, one thing is certain: Disney CEO Bob Chapek is in desperate need of a new breakout hit to change the narrative to something, ANYTHING other than this.
